KUCHING: The discussions between Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) and PETRONAS do not involve Petros' appointment as the sole gas aggregator in Sarawak, says the state Utility and Telecommunications Minister.

Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said both parties were engaging in technical discussions to ensure compliance with requirements under the state's Distribution of Gas Ordinance.

"These discussions do not involve any negotiations on Petros' appointment as the sole gas aggregator.

"The appointment of Petros (to that role) is non-negotiable, meaning no other gas aggregator exists in Sarawak except Petros," he told the Sarawak Legislative Assembly during question time on Wednesday (Nov 13).

Petros was appointed sole gas aggregator on Feb 1 under the Ordinance to procure all natural gas produced in the state for distribution, supply and sale to downstream industry players.

It is also responsible for the planning, development, operation and maintenance of the natural gas distribution network in Sarawak.

On Oct 31, PETRONAS said it was still in discussions with Petros on the implementation of the Ordinance, including aligning the interests and objectives of all parties while ensuring that commitments to investors and customers were fulfilled.

Julaihi also told the assembly that the latest communication between both parties included letters from PETRONAS and Petros dated Nov 1 and Nov 6 respectively.

He urged PETRONAS to make a decision on the matters discussed as quickly as possible.

"We have given enough time to PETRONAS to formalise a decision.

"We have given an extension of three months and we are now in 'injury time', so I hope a decision will be made as soon as possible," he said.
