Planned Teluk Intan Leaning Tower Square gathering this weekend not permitted, police say

IPOH: The police have advised the people not to take part in a planned gathering at the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan Square this Saturday (Nov 16).

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Adnan Basri said the "Himpunan Patriotik Rakyat", which had been planned by a non-governmental organisation to be held there from 5pm to 7pm, has not gotten approval from the police.

"We received the application to hold the gathering on Monday (Nov 11).

"We then put up a notice at the square to get the view of the people in the area about the event," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Nov 13).

"We received feedback from the Teluk Intan Municipal Council, which owns the square, not to allow the gathering to be held, due to its unsuitability as a gathering spot.

"Therefore, the organiser has failed to get an agreement from the municipal council, thus the application is unable to be processed further," he added.

ACP Ahmad Adnan said those who attend the gathering could have actions taken against them under the Peaceful Assembly Act.

"We advise the people to respect the law and to ensure public harmony and safety in the area," he added.

Late last month, a similar illegal gathering was held at the square that was attended by about 400 people.

The gathering was held following an incident whereby Chinese flags were displayed during a cultural event a week earlier.

Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria and Selinsing assemblyman Sallehuddin Abdullah were among those who were present and had been called up by the police to have their statements recorded following the gathering.
