Car makers see surge in car sales as year ends

PETALING JAYA: There is a 20% increase in the total industry volume (TIV) as seen in vehicle sales in October, says the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

Its chief operating officer Muhammad Fateh Teh Abdullah said the TIV increased quite substantially from September.

“This represents the desire of the people to want to purchase vehicles. This was backed by manufacturers offering quite good discounts, especially among notable car brands in Malaysia.

“Somehow, the year-end promotions this time, which is usually from November to December, started earlier in October. We are seeing a surge in the numbers and will continue to see it in the next two months,” he said.

Asked if the proposed increase in minimum wage and year-end bonuses played a factor in the purchases, Muhammad Fateh said this could be the case but was not certain of the extent of it.

He said this was because it was difficult to determine what people did with their extra income.

However, he said one’s decision-making could have been expedited due to the good discounts offered by car makers.
