KUALA LUMPUR - The police are working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to identify an individual who made death threats against a whistleblower connected to a corruption scandal involving a state assemblyman in Sabah.
In a report by Sinar Harian, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated that investigations revealed the victim received a call via WhatsApp from a foreign phone number.
"MCMC has been informed, and we are currently collaborating to obtain information on the owner of the foreign phone number," he said on Thursday (Nov 14).
He mentioned that investigators are currently identifying witnesses to record statements related to this case.
"For now, only the victim has provided a statement to the police," he added.
"We are in the process of recording witness statements to facilitate further investigation of this case," he stated.
On Wednesday (Nov 13), the police confirmed that a whistleblower - who sent an open letter to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia regarding the recent corruption scandal allegations - received death threats.
The case is being investigated by Bukit Aman's Classified Crime Investigation Unit under Section 507 of the Penal Code.
The 36-year-old man is said to have received a phone call via WhatsApp from an unknown number.
During the phone conversation, the suspect, believed to be a local man, allegedly threatened him by claiming to be from a hitman group.
The suspect had received orders to kill within 24 hours if the man does not remain silent, and stated that this call was his final warning.
