Family mourns Penang woman crushed to death by container

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The woman crushed by the container was thoughtful and so attentive that her siblings would often call her 'elder sister'.

Writing on Xiaohongshu, Lee Zi Rou's sister, Zi Qi, said the 21-year-old had just celebrated her birthday in June.

"Although she was the second child, she often took on the role of an 'elder sister,' quietly looking after the entire family," she wrote, according to China Press.

Zi Qi said Zi Rou was her second eldest sister.

She said on the morning of the incident, Zi Rou had even shared a good morning greeting in the family group chat, never expecting it to be a final farewell.

"When we heard the news, we were devastated.

“We rushed to the scene and kept watching ‘Second Sister’ inside the car, with the container crushing her driver’s seat.

"She was not rescued for a long time, and it was truly heartbreaking," she said.

Zi Rou died when the car she was driving was crushed by a container at the Jalan Bukit Tengah traffic light junction on Wednesday (Nov 13).

The container had toppled onto and crushed Zi Rou's car when a lorry negotiating a sharp left turn went out of control.

Scenes from photos and videos captured of the site showed passers-by frantically trying in vain to reach Zi Rou in the car, but the container was too heavy.

She said after a long wait, a crane finally arrived to lift the container.

"Thankfully, 'Second Sister' did not suffer for too long, and her body remained intact.

This is the only way the family can comfort ourselves," she said.

Zi Qi said her sister often enjoyed recording family moments but rarely documented her own life.
