PETALING JAYA: A male student from a public higher education institution has come under suspicion for selling explicit videos of himself for RM150 on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, earning up to RM3,000 monthly.
Investigations by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) showed that the suspect's activities began in 2021 by re-uploading existing explicit content shared by other users on the same platform, reported Sinar Harian.
According to the MCMC, the suspect’s modus operandi later shifted to uploading and selling his own explicit videos with women he knew, amassing over 100,000 followers on the platform.
"The suspect has turned the sale of explicit videos into a source of income, with a monthly income reaching RM3,000 at an estimated price of RM150 per video," MCMC said in a statement on Thursday (Nov 14).
The suspect, said MCMC, was recently summoned to have his statement recorded.
"Following an inspection at a premises in Shah Alam, the MCMC enforcement team seized a mobile phone and SIM card, believed to belong to the suspect and used to upload the content as part of the investigation.
"A statement was also taken from the suspect's friend, a woman who is also a student at a private higher institute of learning," said the commission.
The act of selling explicit videos is an offence under Section 233(2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (AKM 1998), reminded MCMC.
"If convicted, the suspect faces a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to a year, or both," it said.
