Quarry worker killed by falling rock in Manjung


IPOH: A 35-year-old worker at a Manjung quarry here has been crushed to death by a falling rock.

The Perak Occupational Safety and Health Department said the incident happened at about 4.45pm on Thursday (Nov 14).

A team from the department conducted a preliminary investigation after they were notified of the incident and found that the victim was a crawler drill operator.

"The victim, a local, was operating an excavator at the time of the incident.

"While working on the quarry face, the victim was crushed by a rock that fell from the slope next to where he was working," said the department in a statement on Thursday.

It added that the victim was confirmed dead at the scene by medical officers.

A stop-work order has been issued to the quarry until the investigation is completed.

The department has also instructed the employer to conduct an internal investigation to identify the cause of the incident, state improvement measures and present its case to the department.

"The department will conduct further investigation by obtaining relevant documents and recording statements from witnesses, and follow-up visits after improvement and prevention actions have been taken.

"Legal action against the responsible party will be taken if there is a violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994," he added.
