Nearly 40,000 summonses issued to commercial vehicles so far this year, says the police

PETALING JAYA: Nearly 40,000 summonses were issued by the police to commercial vehicles for various offences from January to September this year.

The top offences by these vehicles were carrying dangerous loads, not having a warning triangle, driving with worn out tyres, faulty brake and signal lights as well as failure to secure loads properly.

“From the 4,822 operations conducted, 38,367 summonses were issued to commercial vehicles, with 177 vehicles of various types seized.

“Small lorries, trailers and container lorries were the biggest contributors to accidents involving commercial vehicles from January to September,” said Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri in a statement on Friday (Nov 15).

Within the same period, a total of 168 accidents were recorded involving such vehicles, with 97 of these road mishaps leading to deaths.

Comm Mohd Yusri said the department viewed very seriously the accidents involving commercial vehicles which had led to the deaths of other road users.

“We will ramp up enforcement against all commercial vehicles that do not abide by the road laws and regulations nationwide.

“The department will not compromise and will act sternly in our efforts to ensure the safety of all on the road,” he added.

He said all enforcement actions will be taken under the Road Transport Act 1987 and Land Public Transport Act 2010.
