A DETACHED truck tyre flew several metres midair and landed on a car, killing the driver and damaging four other vehicles on a major expressway in Taiwan, reported China Press.
The fatal accident happened on the Sun Yat-sen Freeway near Changhua county on Thursday.
Authorities said the axle of the truck, which was travelling north on the expressway, snapped and caused the tyre to detach and hit the vehicles on the southbound lanes.
Firemen took some time to extricate the 52-year-old critically wounded driver from the car, but he was pronounced dead at hospital.
The drivers and passengers in the other four vehicles sustained minor injuries.
The crash caused a massive jam during the morning rush hour.
The incident has raised alarm among transportation service providers, who were warned by the authorities to conduct regular inspections of their vehicles before being commissioned for use or they will face fines, licence suspension and imprisonment.
> Semi-retired actor Alex Man Chi-leung appeared to be in good health when he attended a birthday banquet in China recently, Kwong Wah Yit Poh reported.
This comes following reports in recent months that the 67-year-old Hong Kong actor was unwell due to diabetes.
A video circulating on social media showed Man greeting the host and guests at the banquet.
Man, who won a Golden Horse best actor award for his role in the 1988 film Gangland Odyssey, was accompanied by his three understudies, King-kong Lam, Cheung Ka-sang and Oscar Li, at the event.
