Man and woman killed by drunk driver in Johor collision


JOHOR BARU: Two people were killed after their motorcycle was run over by a vehicle, driven by a man under the influence of alcohol.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the collision occurred at approximately 4am on Saturday (Nov 16) at the intersection of Jalan Besar and Jalan Masjid.

“The driver heading towards the Pasir Gudang Highway allegedly ran a red light and collided with a motorcycle coming from Jalan Masjid.

“The motorcyclist, a 37-year-old man, and his pillion rider, a 35-year-old woman, sustained severe injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene,” he said in a statement.

Supt Mohd Sohaimi added that the 34-year-old driver of the car was found to have alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit and has been taken into custody.

“However, a urine test confirmed he was not under the influence of drugs.

The case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The police are urging road users to obey traffic laws and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, which poses serious risks to both the driver and others on the road.
