KUALA LUMPUR: Tributes have been pouring in for famed local composer, Datuk Hashim Said, popularly known as S Atan, who died on Saturday at age 75, describing him as a musical genius who had profoundly influenced the local music industry.
Renowned singer Datuk Jamal Abdillah said local music fans would feel the loss greatly, especially with his influence in so many good Malay songs.
"It’s the loss of someone so meaningful to the local music industry,” he told Bernama when met at S Atan’s residence in Taman Bukit Kajang here on Saturday (Nov 16), adding that he had several songs produced by S Atan, including three popular Hari Raya songs.
"I respected him greatly. He was very strict, especially in the recording studio,” he added.
Veteran singer Datuk DJ Dave said just last month, he had the chance to visit the late S. Atan at his home while he was unwell, which he describes as a memory that is now incredibly meaningful to him.
"Today, I mourn the loss of a dear friend whom I deeply respected, a musical genius who brought life to countless unforgettable songs, including my hits Menjelang Hari Raya and Kawan Setia.
"This is a tremendous loss for the music world in Malaysia. His talent, passion, and dedication have left an indelible mark on our industry. He also worked tirelessly in composing Setia Perpaduan, my unity-themed song released last year—a testament to his unwavering commitment to bringing people together through music.
"My prayers are with his family during this difficult time. May they find strength to endure this loss, and may his soul be blessed and placed among the righteous. Thank you, my friend, for the melodies and beautiful memories you have left behind. You will always be remembered," said DJ Dave in a heartfelt tribute to his friend.
Meanwhile, S Atan’s sister, lyricist Fatah Hasan said that she and her brother were working on a project to produce several songs for a local female artist.
She was slated to produce three songs and her brother intended to do five, but only managed to complete three.
"Insya-Allah, I will carry on to finish the project and the three songs my brother did will be the final masterpieces by S Atan,” she said.
S Atan, who died at his home due to a lung infection, will be buried in the Sungai Kantan Muslim Cemetery in Kajang at 11am on Sunday (Nov 17).
