Two civil servants held for graft

KOTA KINABALU: Two civil servants were arrested for accepting bribes of about RM130,000 from contractors in return for being given contracts for upgrading and maintenance of school toilets in a district in Sabah.

The two male suspects in their 50s were arrested when they turned up at the state headquarters of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Thursday, sources said.

The sources said one of the suspects had been remanded for six days, until Nov 21, while the second suspect was released on MACC bail after his statement was recorded.

The sources said initial investigations indicated the two civil servants had demanded bribes of up to 30% of the project’s value.

“It worked out to about RM130,000, which they took from several contractors,” a source added.

According to another source, MACC also confiscated approximately RM90,000 in cash and two luxury vehicles bought with the bribe money.
