Johor government allocates RM70mil for 83 flood-prone areas, says exco

KLUANG: A total of RM70mil has been allocated by the Johor government to address 83 flood-prone areas in Johor next year, says state exco Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor (pic).

The Johor housing and local government committee chairman said that starting in 2022, the Johor government has established a dedicated Hotspot Flood Task Force to integrate the resources of 16 local authorities and mitigate flooding issues.

“We have deployed proactive measures to address flood-prone areas through a coordinated effort involving all 16 local councils.

“This includes significant planning and budgeting that have been allocated over the years to tackle these challenges.

“For example, we plan to address 83 hotspots with RM70mil allocation next year in the hope that we will finally be able to address all identified hotspots in the state,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after officiating the state-level World Town Planning Day (HPBS) at Stadium Mini Simpang Renggam here on Sunday (Nov 17).

He added that for 2023, 119 hotspots were identified with 123 projects implemented at a cost of RM54mil.

In 2024, there were 65 hotspots with 126 projects and an allocation of RM53mil.

“In total, 332 flood mitigation projects across 221 hotspots are planned between 2023 and 2025, with a funding commitment of RM179mil,” he said.

More to come.
