All 22,000 asnaf households in Johor to get takaful coverage

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAIJ) has initiated a programme to provide takaful (Islamic insurance) coverage to all 22,000 heads of asnaf (tithe recipients) households in the state.

Johor Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid stated that this initiative, in partnership with Agrobank, ensures financial protection for vulnerable families in the event of accidents or fatalities involving breadwinners.

"Johor is the first state to introduce comprehensive welfare assistance," he said.

"Asnaf now receives not only monthly support but also year-round financial protection. This is essential, as their breadwinners often face unexpected challenges that can severely impact their families."

He made these remarks after the zakat (tithe) distribution ceremony at a hotel in Puteri Harbour on Monday (Nov 18).

Mohd Fared added that there has been an increased awareness of zakat contributions from businesses and individuals.

"MAIJ will continue to urge the Johor community to prioritise local welfare efforts," he added.

In another matter, Mohd Fared shared that MAIJ is considering appointing village heads as amil (collector) of information to streamline welfare assistance.

He explained that this proposal aims to improve aid delivery, ensuring residents can access assistance more effectively.

"The village head is well-placed to oversee both administrative and welfare needs. This integration will reduce confusion and prevent unnecessary reliance on social media or mainstream media to seek help," he said.
