PETALING JAYA: The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has raised concerns about luggage designed to also function as a rideable vehicle, which is being used particularly in high-risk zones like aircraft boarding areas.
"Passengers and personnel should be informed that rideable luggage is not allowed beyond designated areas, such as terminal concourses and waiting zones," said CAAM chief executive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud in a statement on Nov 15.
He said all luggage with electric motors must be powered off when entering the apron, and the battery must be deactivated to prevent accidental activation.
Capt Norazman said ground personnel should be trained to identify rideable luggage and know the safety protocols for handling it. Any instance of such equipment in the apron area should be reported to airport security personnel.
"'There should also be passenger education through pre-flight communication and signature and announcements.
"It is recommended that airport operators, airlines and ground handling service providers collaborate to enforce these guidelines," added Capt Norazman.
