Cops nab 17 for illegal street racing in Seberang Perai

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Seventeen individuals were arrested for their alleged involvement in illegal street racing at Seberang Jaya on Sunday (Nov 17) night.

The Central Seberang Perai district police, via their Facebook page, stated that the operation took place from KM130 to KM135 of the North-South Expressway northbound to combat illegal racing in the area.

The operation was conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) from the district and state police headquarters, Bukit Aman, and was assisted by PLUS auxiliary police and the Environment Department.

During the operation, the authorities identified groups of teenagers on motorcycles and in cars gathered along the North-South Expressway to watch motorcyclists engaging in illegal racing.

This illegal activity often occurs during weekend holidays, causing concern among highway users.

Most of these illegal racers ride at high speeds, go against the traffic flow, perform stunts like the Superman pose, weave through traffic in a zigzag manner, and create loud noises with modified vehicle exhausts, posing a danger to themselves and other road users.

The operation also saw 536 motorcycles screened, with 316 summonses issued for various offences, and 92 motorcycles were confiscated.

The arrests of the 17 individuals were made under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police also remind the public to always comply with traffic laws and regulations for the benefit of everyone, while operations like this will be carried out continuously.
