MUAR: Police have arrested five more foreigners including two women to aid investigations in the murder of a Myanmar national.
Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the arrests were part of ongoing investigations into a fight between migrant workers at their furniture factory’s hostel room in Bakri that led to the death of a male Myanmar national.
“On Friday (Nov 15) night, at around 8.30pm, police made additional arrests following the incident, which happened on Tuesday (Nov 12) night.
“The police arrested three male Myanmar nationals, a female Myanmar national and a female Indonesian in two separate locations in a residential area within Johor Baru,” he said here on Monday (Nov 18).
ACP Raiz Mukhliz added that the five suspects, aged between 26 and 48 years, admitted to being involved in the brawl of 11 migrant workers, which led to one death.
He said police also seized three mobile phones and some clothes belonging to the suspects to help with its investigation.
“The five suspects are under remand for seven days to assist in the investigation,” he said adding that additional updates on the case would be given soon.
Last Tuesday, a Myanmar national was killed in a fight involving a group of foreign workers in their hostel room.
The male victim whose age is not confirmed as he had no identification documents, succumbed to his injuries at Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital.
Police initially arrested four suspects, all Myanmar nationals aged between 24 and 35 and remanded them for seven days to assist with the investigation.
In an unrelated case, the Marine Police Region II has seized 64 cartons of various beer brands believed to be unpaid duties from a sundry shop in Taman Rinting near Masai in Johor Baru.
Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said that the seizure was made following a raid at around 4pm at the premise on Sunday (Nov 17).
“In the raid, police also detained a local male in his 20s, who was manning the counter at the time. Check on the suspect and find he has one previous record.
“We were able to seize 64 cartons of various beer brands worth RM20,000,” he said adding that the case was being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
