KUALA LUMPUR: The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry will conduct a special briefing for Members of Parliament on the issues of misconduct affecting the National Farmers Organisation (Nafas), says Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup.
The Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister said Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu would address the matter in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Nov 19).
“Tomorrow (Nov 19) morning, during the Minister’s Question Time session, the minister will specifically address the issue of Nafas. I hope all MPs will be present to hear the minister’s explanation.
“Next week, the ministry will hold a briefing for MPs on Nov 25. I also hope other MPs will attend at that time,” he said during the committee stage debate on the Supply Bill 2025 for his ministry in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Nov 18).
Earlier, several MPs raised concerns over Nafas's challenges and requested clarification on the ministry’s actions to ensure the issue does not recur.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) previously announced that it had launched an investigation into the existence of a cartel involved in the distribution and supply of paddy fertiliser contracts within an organisation under the control of a ministry, valued at an estimated RM1.8bil.
The commission conducted several raids around Kuala Lumpur, including at the organisation’s headquarters, the ministry, and nine companies that were awarded related projects.
Following these revelations, the Registrar of Farmers Organisations suspended Nafas’ Constitution immediately.
During the suspension, Nafas’ Board of Directors and management had no authority, as outlined in the organisation’s Constitution.
