JOHOR BARU: Companies in Johor are urged to provide comfortable housing and amenities for workers in anticipation of the investors that will be coming in under the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), says state executive councillor Lee Ting Han.
The Johor investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman said more economic activities are expected to take place in the next two to three years in the state following the implementation of the JS-SEZ and Forest City Special Financial Zone.
“We expect to see more job opportunities for the locals and at the same time for certain sectors like manufacturing, more foreign labour will be needed.
“I urge employers to comply with the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities (Amendment) Act 2019 (446),” he said after launching I Jaya Group’s centralised living quarters (CLQ) project in Indahpura here on Monday (Nov 18).
He noted that there are still stubborn companies in Johor that refuse to comply with Act 446.
“The state Labour Department conducts weekly checks on employers to ensure compliance and as of October, RM593,500 worth of compounds have been issued to 45 companies in Johor.
“The offences include not providing suitable accommodation for their workers and also the failure to obtain a workers’ quarters certification, which could be fined up to RM50,000 if convicted,” he said.
