Assessment tax rates in Ipoh should be lowered, says Perak MCA

IPOH: The Perak MCA has urged the Ipoh City Council (MBI) to reduce its proposed assessment tax rates, currently set between 3% and 6%.

Publicity Bureau chief Chung Kok Heung highlighted that the proposed rates are higher than those of other local governments in the country.

"Shah Alam and Subang Jaya have assessment rates at 3.25% and 5%, respectively, for double-storey properties. In contrast, residents here are required to pay a 9% tax rate for single-storey properties, which is higher than the rate for double-storey properties in other cities," he stated at a press conference on Nov 19.

Chung claimed that the assessment tax rates here are higher than in other cities.

He noted that the bureau has received a total of 150 complaint letters from the public.

"We have submitted about 30 of them to MBI, and the rest will be handed in soon.

"One complaint involves a property owner who received two different assessment tax rate letters for the same property, with one stating a 9% rate and the other 9.5%.

"The lot and the owner are the same, but two different rates were applied," he said.

Chung suggested that the proposed 9% property assessment tax rate is quite high and could be lowered.

"MBI should review the areas where the annual value appears to be disproportionate with the actual value," he added.
