Cop assaulted at Johor surau, 28-year-old suspect nabbed

ISKANDAR PUTERI: A 59-year-old policeman was hurt after being assaulted by a man while preparing to perform zohor prayer at a surau in Kangkar Pulai, here.

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan said the incident occurred at 1pm on Monday (Nov 18) when the victim, together with another 33-year-old policeman, was stopping at the surau to pray.

“The assailant, a 28-year-old local man, attacked and injured one officer, causing facial cuts and injuries to his leg and right hand.

“The motive behind the attack is still being investigated,” he said in a statement here on Tuesday (Nov 19).

ACP Kumarasan added that the suspect was later apprehended, and initial checks revealed he had three prior criminal records and two drug-related offences.

“However, a preliminary urine test returned negative for drugs.

“Investigations also revealed that the suspect has a history of psychiatric treatment at a hospital in Johor Baru.

“He is currently under remand for four days, from Nov 19 to Nov 22,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 332 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing their duty, which carries a potential penalty of three years’ imprisonment or a fine upon conviction.

ACP Kumarasan added that the public is urged not to speculate about the case as investigations are ongoing.
