Floods hit Kemaman: One relief centre opened

KUALA TERENGGANU: Kemaman has become the first district in Terengganu hit by floods following the Northeast Monsoon after heavy downpours since early Tuesday (Nov 19) morning.

According to the Terengganu state disaster management committee secretariat, one relief centre was opened at Balai Raya Meraga Beris at 1pm to house 12 evacuees from two families.

"The evacuees are five men, three women and four children, from the Teluk Kalong affordable housing estate. The evacuation is still ongoing, including at Kampung Baru Kemasik," the secretariat said in a statement on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Kemaman district police chief Supt Hanyan Ramlan said when contacted that they were monitoring areas in the district to ensure safety and public order.

Several routes from Chukai to Paka, Dungun have been flooded but still accessible, but he advised motorists to remain cautious.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had previously issued a continuous heavy rain alert for Terengganu, Pahang and Johor effective Nov 23.- Bernama
