Sabah lawmakers cautioned against selective use of unemployment data

KOTA KINABALU: Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe has urged lawmakers not to selectively use data to fit narratives without verifying facts.

Addressing concerns about Sabah's high unemployment rate, Phoong acknowledged the increase in unemployed individuals from 178,600 last year to 181,500 in the third quarter of this year, but stressed the importance of considering employment growth as well.

"The number of unemployed has increased by nearly 3,000, but we must also acknowledge the growth in employment. In the third quarter of 2021, there were 1.83 million employed individuals. This increased to 1.948 million in 2022, and this year, the number has risen further to 2.109 million, showing an increase of around 300,000," Phoong said.

He noted this reflects recovery post-Covid, despite ongoing challenges.

"Criticism is valid, and I accept it, but we must not selectively quote statistics to support a particular viewpoint. Yes, we can focus on the nearly 3,000 unemployed, but the data also shows a significant increase in employment," he said.

Phoong explained that while many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have closed, new businesses are emerging.

"Between 2019 and 2022, 11 SMEs shut down. However, according to a survey by SME Corp, from 2015 to 2022, SMEs in Malaysia, including those in Sabah, grew by 6.2%, with Sabah ranking second in the country," he said.

"Business operates in cycles—some businesses close, but others are started," Phoong added.

He also emphasized that, in light of the high unemployment rate, the Sabah government is committed to creating more job opportunities for the people.
