SEREMBAN: Negri Sembilan Pakatan Harapan will go back to the drawing board to decide if it will pursue an election pledge to limit the tenure of the Mentri Besar to two terms.
State Pakatan chief and Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said this was necessary as the motion did not get the required support when tabled in the state legislative assembly previously.
"The state Pakatan members will revisit this.
"We need to look at it again as it was not passed previously," he told reporters after chairing the state exco meeting at Wisma Negri on Wednesday (Nov 20).
The state Pakatan had, in its 2018 election manifesto, pledged to limit the term of Mentri Besar to two terms or a maximum of 10 years.
However, the motion did not receive the two-thirds support in the state legislative assembly when tabled in December 2021.
Then, only 19 assemblymen had supported the motion, 13 opposed it and four were absent.
Aminuddin said the matter also needs to be discussed by the unity government.
"This is also important as we need to decide if all states (under the unity government) will be bound by such a rule," he said.
Penang became the first state in the country to limit the tenure of the Chief Minister to two terms.
This was done in November 2018 when a motion tabled at its state assembly received more than two thirds of the support.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow was then reported as saying that limiting the tenure to two terms would ensure no abuse of power and will help create leadership renewal.
In September 2022, the Sabah Cabinet had also agreed in principle to limit the term of the Chief Minister to two terms.
