KUALA LUMPUR: French President Emmanuel Macron has sparked admiration and curiosity among social media users by posting on his official X (formerly known as Twitter) account, @EmmanuelMacron, in the Malay language.
The post was about his meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the G20 Summit.
The post, which was brief but written entirely in Malay, read: "Bersama Perdana Menteri Malaysia @AnwarIbrahim, yang juga merupakan Pengerusi ASEAN. Pertemuan pertama ini akan membolehkan kami mempererat hubungan antara negara kami, khususnya dalam bidang peralihan tenaga, salah satu keutamaan bersama kami (With Malaysian Prime Minister @AnwarIbrahim, who is also the Chairman of ASEAN. This first meeting will enable us to strengthen the relationship between our countries, especially in the field of energy transition, one of our shared priorities).”
Accompanying the post were photographs of Macron and Anwar shaking hands during their bilateral meeting at the recently concluded G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The thoughtful gesture by Macron was praised in the comments.
A user named @ehsan_zakaria exclaimed: "Ingatkan auto translate, rupanya dia betul-betul guna BM! Bahasa Melayu menduniaaa (Thought it was auto translate, it turns out he actually used Malay! Malay is going global)!”
Another user, @safwanmohamad, echoed similar sentiments, saying: "Saya ingat translated speech... Rupanya memang BM (I thought it was translated speech...Looks like it really was BM).”
Another user, @d_syahir, expressed pride in Macron's choice of language: "Bangga aku! Orang luar pun guna Bahasa Melayu (I'm proud! Even foreigners are using Malay).”
The post also reminded users of past French-Malaysian engagements.
User @azrullez replied, saying: "Jemput datang ke Malaysia. Kali terakhir Presiden Perancis datang ke Malaysia ialah tahun 2017, iaitu Presiden Francois Hollande (Please come to Malaysia. The last time a French President visited Malaysia was in 2017, that was President Francois Hollande).”
During their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, Macron and Anwar expressed their commitment to continue to strengthen relations and cooperation between France and Malaysia. – Bernama
