KUALA LUMPUR: The government is finalising a framework on poverty eradication and hunger alleviation, which will be presented for international collaboration, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said Malaysia has been invited to submit its framework as part of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty initiative, led by Brazil as the G20 chair, following his recent work visit during the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
“We know that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is deeply committed to poverty eradication programmes.
“He feels a strong responsibility to eliminate extreme poverty in a short period, despite the enormous scale of the issue (in Brazil),” Anwar said during Prime Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Nov 21).
“Therefore, we have been asked to submit our framework and details on the implementation of programmes in Malaysia for review and potential joint execution.”
Anwar said key government departments, including the Implementation Coordination Unit and the Economic Planning Unit under the Prime Minister’s Department, alongside other relevant agencies, have been tasked with preparing the framework.
In addition to the poverty initiative, Anwar said Malaysia has also been approached to enhance cooperation on anti-corruption efforts.
“I have requested the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to prepare for closer collaboration, as both Peru and Brazil have expressed interest in strengthening ties between their anti-corruption bodies and Malaysia,” he added.
