Oldest groom in 2023 was 91, oldest bride was 86, says Stats Dept

PETALING JAYA: There's no age limit to love in Malaysia with the oldest groom being 91 while the oldest bride was 86 last year, says the Statistics Department.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said statistics showed that the oldest groom and bride in 2023 were 91.0 and 86.0 years old, respectively.

For Muslim couples, the oldest age for grooms was 91 while for brides, it was at 85 in 2023.

For non-Muslim couples, the oldest age for grooms was 85 while for brides, it was at 83 in 2023.

"On the other hand, 0.1% of grooms aged 65 years and over married younger brides aged 24 years and below," he said.

The highest number of marriages, he added, falls under the age group of 25 to 29 years for both grooms and brides.

While marriages may be down last year, more couples from different ethnic groups are saying "I do" to each other.

Mohd Uzir said in 2023, 6.2% of total marriages were between grooms and brides of different ethnic groups.

"The number of inter-ethnic marriages increased 28.0% from 14,028 in 2022 to 17,956 in 2023.

"The composition of inter-ethnic marriages among Muslims was 48.8% and 51.6% for non-Muslims," he said in a statement here on Thursday (Nov 21).
