Bersih chairman praises Anwar’s positive reaction over D grade rating

KUALA LUMPUR: The positive feedback and commitment to improve is a reflection of the Prime Minister's openness to criticism, says Bersih.

Bersih chairman Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz welcomed Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's positive reaction to the D grade rating the electoral reform watchdog gave the unity government in its two-year performance evaluation report.

"The positive feedback followed by a commitment to improve the grades in the future, is a reflection of the Prime Minister's openness in accepting criticism.

"The performance report is temporary and the government still has three years to make improvements.

“The report acknowledges the slight progress made for institutional reforms such as passing the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023, amending the Audit Act 1957, and strengthening the Special Select Committee of Parliament in addition to other agendas that are still in the process of being dealt with," he said on Thursday (Nov 21).

He then urged the government to take a more serious look at the agendas it promised as it enters the third year in power, while it still has the mandate to do so, reported Astro Awani.

On Wednesday, Bersih gave the Pakatan Harapan-led administration a “D” grade in its mid-term evaluation, attributing the poor performance to the coalition government’s failure to carry out significant institutional reforms.

“About Bersih’s report, it is okay to get a ‘D’... (at least it’s not) an ‘F’. Today, we get a ‘D’ mark for the UPSR but next time, we can get an ‘A’ mark for the SPM,” Anwar told Parliament yesterday.

The reform group also ranked Anwar behind its predecessors Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in fulfilling their reform promises.
