Botched cable theft triggers fire, explosion, power disruption in Shah Alam

SHAH ALAM: Two suspects suffered burns to their face, hands and legs after a botched attempt to steal electric cable led to an explosion and fire at a substation in Shah Alam.

In a statement on Friday (Nov 22), Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said that the incident happened at Seksyen 6 earlier that day.

"Investigations showed that both suspects had broken into an electrical substation and had attempted to cut the cable there. Their action led to an explosion and a fire.

"Both suspects were rushed to the Shah Alam Hospital for treatment.

“They are in stable condition and are being detained at the ward for further treatment," he said.

He added that the incident led to power disruptions around the area, and losses incurred from repair works have been estimated at around RM350,000.

Both suspects, aged 49 and 31 years old, had dozens of criminal and drug-related offences, with a total of 31 prior offences between them.
