KOTA BARU: Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, who pulled off a stunning upset in the Nenggiri state by-election on Aug 17, was sworn in as an assemblyman at the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly during a meeting here.

The 38-year-old took his oath yesterday before Speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah, Bernama reported.

The Kelantan Umno Youth chief garnered 9,091 votes to beat Bersatu’s Mohd Rizwadi Ismail by a 3,352-vote majority in the closely watched contest.

The by-election was called after the former holder of the state seat Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, who won as a member of Bersatu, was dismissed by the party.

Mohd Amar had on June 19 declared the Nenggiri seat vacant after the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly received a notice under Clause (3) of Article 31A of the Kelantan Constitution and a notice from Bersatu that Mohd Azizi had ceased to be a member.

Mohd Azizi took the dispute to court, but failed in his bid to stop the by-election following the High Court’s dismissal of his interim injunction application.
