Nurul Izzah invited on overseas trip in her capacity as think tank chairman, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's daughter Nurul Izzah was invited to join the government delegation during a recent overseas trip in her capacity as chairman of the Social & Economic Research Initiative (Seri) think tank, says Fahmi Fadzil.

The government spokesman and Communications Minister said he had looked into the baseless claims and slander by various quarters on the matter.

"Nurul Izzah and Institute of Strategic and International Studies chairman Datuk Prof Dr Mohd Faiz Abdullah were invited by the organiser," he told a post-Cabinet meeting press conference here on Friday (Nov 22).

"Nurul Izzah, among others, (was invited) and (the Prime Minister's wife) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail did not join the delegation," he said.

On Thursday (Nov 21), an Opposition lawmaker questioned the travel expenses for Nurul Izzah, who was seen accompanying her father at official events during his recent overseas trips.

Bersatu's Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal asked if Nurul Izzah’s travel expenses were borne by the government.

Asked about her contributions to the trip, Fahmi said he had no information on that.

Anwar returned to Malaysia on Wednesday (Nov 20) after completing visits to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Peru and Brazil from Nov 9 to 19 to strengthen strategic cooperation and generate investment for Malaysia.

During the trip, he also led the Malaysian delegation to the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Week in Peru and the G20 Summit in Brazil.
