Almost 40,000 summonses issued to commercial vehicles nationwide so far this year

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 38,367 traffic summonses have been issued to commercial vehicles for various offences so far this year, says Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director said the department issued the summonses from January to September, 2024.

"We conducted 4,822 operations nationwide this year and seized 177 vehicles.

"We are aware there are a lot of accidents involving heavy vehicles lately. We have always been proactive in conducting enforcement operations on such commercial vehicles," he said when contacted on Saturday (Nov 23).

Comm Mohd Yusri said a total of 17,905 individuals have been killed in accidents nationwide from January to October, 2024.

"Of the overall total, the majority of those killed were in cars (15,402), followed by motorcycles (1,040), lorries (825), four-wheel drive (619), while 19 were pedestrians," he said.

Some 198 accidents this year involved commercial vehicles, he said.

"97 of the total cases were fatal accidents, followed by 32 cases where the victims were seriously injured and 39 cases where victims sustained minor injuries," he said.

Comm Mohd Yusri reminded all road users to be extra careful during the northeast monsoon season, where heavy rains are expected.

"Always be mindful while on the road for the safety of all road users.

"Pay attention to road conditions and be aware of other road users," he said.

Comm Mohd Yusri advised those experiencing vehicle breakdowns to place sufficient signage to alert other road users.

"Park in the emergency lane and ensure there are ample signs that a vehicle has stalled or broken down.

"Such steps are essential to prevent accidents involving stalled vehicles occurring," he said.
