Body of missing fisherman found near Pulau Ketam

PETALING JAYA: The body of a 59-year-old fisherman has been found some 8.1 nautical miles off Pulau Ketam following a search and rescue operation.

The victim had fallen off a vessel near the island on Thursday (Nov 21).

Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Maritime Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) had received a report on the incident on Friday (Nov 22) morning.

"The victim had fallen off the boat at about 9.30am on Thursday.

"He had gone fishing with a friend but he had fallen off the vessel and was swept away by the strong current," he said in a statement on Saturday (Nov 23).

Two MMEA vessels were deployed along with other assets from the Marine Police and local fishermen, he said.

"The body was discovered at about 10.45am on Friday," he said.

Abdul Muhaimin reminded the public to always prioritise safety before conducting any maritime activity especially during the Northeast Monsoon season.

"We urge those with information on any maritime incident to contact the Selangor MMEA operations centre at 013- 6606652 or the MERS 999 hotline," he said.
