Cable theft attempt leaves 8,000 without power in Kinarut

KOTA KINABALU: An attempt to steal cables in Kinarut caused a blackout lasting over an hour in the district.

Sabah Electricity senior general manager (asset management) Mohd Yusmanizam Mohd Yusof said their technical team received information of a blackout in the area on Friday (Nov 22) and went to check on its cause.

“They found that a 33KW Lokawi-Kinarut underground cable had caught fire under the Kinarut river bridge, and it is believed that this was a failed attempt to steal the cable,” he said in a statement Saturday (Nov 23).

He said the blackout started around 2.18am and was fully restored in phase by 3.37am.

Yusmanizam said this blackout affected over 8,000 users.

“We appreciate the support and assistance rendered by the public to help us provide better service to our customers, and hope this cooperation between the public and Sabah Electricity will continue,” he added.

He urged the public to take care of utility infrastructures to help the company provide stable and safe power supply to its customers.

“We are committed to providing the best to our customers and hope the public can work with us to achieve this objective,” stressed Yusmanizam.
