KUALA LUMPUR: National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has called on Malaysians not to take racial unity and cultural diversity for granted.
He said that the ministry has embarked on more than 300 high-impact programmes this year to bolster racial unity.
"We can be proud that Malaysia is one of the nations that has successfully maintained peace amidst its ethnic diversity. However, the trials of the modern world, including social media use and societal polarisation, necessitate our continued vigilance," he said.
He further stressed that preserving this legacy is our shared obligation, to benefit both the present and future generations. His remarks were made at the Sarawak Children’s Festival on Saturday (Nov 23).
Other notable attendees included National Unity Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Hasnol Zam Zam Ahmad, and Museums Department director-general, Datuk Kamarul Baharin A Kasim.
Addressing the festival, Aaron noted that beyond celebrating the splendour of cultural heritage, it also serves as an avenue to solidify relationships among communities, fostering the noble values underpinning unity.
"The Anak Sarawak Festival exemplifies how culture can be a unifying instrument. The ethnic diversity in Sarawak, encompassing the Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Sarawak Malays, Melanau, Chinese and others, has demonstrated and reflected an exceptional uniqueness," he stated.
"Through this festival, we do not merely celebrate our cultural identity, but also reinforce our bonds as one extensive Malaysian family," he concluded. – Bernama
