Gold shop employee nabbed for stealing precious ring


JOHOR BARU: A 41-year-old man was arrested for stealing gold jewellery from his employer at a gold shop in Taman Daya, here.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the theft occurred on Saturday (Nov 16). The suspect, who had been instructed by his employer to install security cameras at the gold shop, was caught on the same security camera stealing a 16-gram gold ring valued at RM5,814.

“The suspect pawned the stolen ring at a jewellery shop in Johor Baru for RM4,950.

“Acting on information, police arrested the suspect on Friday (Nov 22) in Ulu Tiram,” he said in a statement here on Saturday (Nov 23).

ACP Raub added that some of the items seized during the arrest included clothing, shoes, and the pawn receipt.

“A background check revealed the suspect had no prior criminal record.

“The suspect is currently under remand for four days, from Nov 23 to Nov 26, to assist in investigations under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building,” he said.

In an unrelated operation, ACP Raub said that the Johor Baru South police raided an entertainment outlet in Taman Mount Austin on Nov 23, at 1.30am.

During the raid, 81 individuals, including staff and visitors, were screened.

“A total of 16 individuals were detained, comprising a 35-year-old local man working as a cashier and 15 foreign women aged between 20 and 34,” he said, adding the premise was

Items seized during the operation included an audio mixer, a speaker, a microphone, three business receipts and three sashes valued at RM200, RM300, and RM1,314.

He added that investigations revealed the premises were operating without a license, employing foreign workers without valid permits, and misusing social visit passes for employment purposes.

Further checks confirmed that none of the detainees had prior criminal records.

The local suspect was remanded for two days from Nov 23 to Nov 24, while the 15 foreign nationals were remanded for four days from Nov 23 to Nov 26.

The case is being investigated under Section 55B and Section 6(1)(C) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for employing foreign workers without valid permits and entering and staying in Malaysia without valid documents.

It is also investigated under Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for misuse of social visit passes, Sections 6(2) of the Johor Entertainment Places Enactment for operating without a licence and Section 3(1) of the Local Government Licensing By-Laws for operating a business without a license.
