KUALA LUMPUR: Another Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) cadet has been charged in court, this time for injuring his junior by stomping on his stomach with spiked boots.

Mohd Adil Mat Awang Ghani, 22, pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here to causing injury to Muhammad Haziq Iqbal Ahmad Rashidi, 19, by stomping on his abdomen while they were on the academy’s parade ground at UPNM at the Sungai Besi Camp, Cheras, on Oct 21.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of one-year imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

According to the charge read out before Magistrate Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim, the offence was committed at a field at the military training academy in UPNM at about 10.45pm on Oct 21.

When asked for his plea, Mohd Adil answered: “Tidak, puan (I plead not guilty, ma’am)”.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Sabri Othman offered bail at RM10,000 in one surety.

He also asked the court to impose an order for the accused not to come near the complainant in the case.

Lawyer Nurul Diyana Basher from the National Legal Aid Foundation, who appeared for Mohd Adil, said the accused was no longer considered a young offender due to his age.

However, she asked the court to consider that Mohd Adil was still undergoing military training and strict conditions by the court may affect the training.

“He has been charged but not convicted.

“The court must not be punitive. We ask the court’s discretion to impose a low bail amount, as low as possible,” she said.

The magistrate fixed bail at RM5,000 in one surety and ordered the accused not to come near the complainant.

She also fixed Feb 10 for mention.

Earlier this month, another UPNM cadet Amirul Iskandar Norhanizan, 22, claimed trial at the Sessions Court to voluntarily causing hurt to another junior by using a steaming hot iron.
