Cable theft bid disrupts power supply

KOTA KINABALU: An attempt to steal cables in Kinarut caused a one-hour blackout in the district.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd senior general manager (asset management) Mohd Yusmanizam Mohd Yusof said when its technical team received information of a blackout in the area on Friday, they went to the location near here to check on the cause.

"They found that a 33KW Lokawi-Kinarut underground cable had caught fire under the Kinarut river bridge, and it is believed that this was a failed attempt to steal the cable,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said the electricity supply, which was disrupted at 2.18am, was fully restored in phases by 3.37am.

Yusmanizam added that the blackout affected over 8,000 users.

"We appreciate the support and assistance rendered by the public to help us provide better service to our customers, and hope this cooperation between the public and Sabah Electricity will continue,” he said.

He urged the public to take care of utility infrastructure to help the company provide a stable and safe power supply to its customers.
