Evolving family needs demand more child-centric initiatives, says Wan Azizah

KUALA LUMPUR: More children-centric initiatives must be implemented to address the evolving needs of families and children, says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The wife of the Prime Minister, who is also Bandar Tun Razak MP, emphasised the importance of involving more ministries, government agencies, NGOs, and private sectors to spearhead these efforts under the leadership of the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM).

“Technological advancements and social changes have created both opportunities and challenges.

“Previously, many mothers were full-time homemakers, dedicating their time to nurturing and educating their children.

“Today, with most parents working, children are often cared for at day-care centres or by domestic helpers, as extended family support is no longer as accessible,” she said when launching the 2024 National Children’s Day celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) on Sunday (Nov 24).

Earlier, Dr Wan Azizah had also launched the newly unveiled National Children’s Policy.

She also called for the setting up of more day care centres to support working parents, while urging parents to remain actively involved in their children’s development.

“Despite the demands of work, parents must instill positive values and ethics in their children.

“Bridging the generation gap is essential to maintain strong family units,” she added.

Dr Wan Azizah also highlighted the shared responsibility of society in ensuring the safety of children.

“Every individual must play a role in protecting children from abuse, neglect, or harm.

“If you suspect any risk or questionable situations, report them immediately.

“This is a time to mind not only your own affairs but also the welfare of others,” she said, encouraging parents and guardians to seek help when needed.

She also commended KPWKM under the leadership of Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri for its continuous efforts to safeguard children’s welfare, including the launch of the new National Children’s Policy.

Dr Wan Azizah also recognised the Health Ministry’s 1,000 Days of Childhood initiative, which focuses on ensuring proper nutrition for children during their critical early development phase.

Reflecting on recent achievements, Dr Wan Azizah mentioned the passing of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024, which grants equal citizenship rights to children born overseas to Malaysian mothers.

The recent Budget 2025, she said, also includes numerous initiatives and aid programmes benefitting children directly and indirectly.

Addressing the children, she left them with heartfelt advice.

“Pursue knowledge wherever you are and strive for the highest level of education.

“Honour and care for your parents as there is great blessing in doing so.

“Avoid unhealthy and immoral activities, and never give up.

“Believe in your potential and work to contribute positively to yourself, your family, and the nation,” she added.
