Four arrested for driving under influence in Johor Baru traffic operation

JOHOR BARU: Police have detained four drivers after they were found driving under the influence of alcohol during a traffic operation here.

Johor Baru South OCPD Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the operation was conducted between 1am and 5am on Sunday (Nov 24) morning at Jalan Persiaran Desa Tebrau and Jalan Eco Cascadia 6 in Taman Setia Indah.

“During the operation, police inspected 101 individuals, including 32 women, and 90 vehicles, consisting of 63 cars, 18 motorcycles, and nine other vehicles.

“Some 25 summonses were issued for 38 road offences, including driving without a licence, vehicle plates not conforming to specifications, modified exhausts, and failure to wear seat belts,” he said on Sunday (Nov 24).

ACP Raub also said that four local men, aged between 22 and 41, were arrested under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“They were found driving under the influence, with their alcohol readings exceeding the legal limit,” he added, noting that all four suspects had been released on police bail and would be charged in court soon.

ACP Raub reminded the public that driving under the influence of alcohol is not only an offence but also a danger to both the driver and other road users.

He urged all road users to avoid driving after consuming alcohol and to use public transport or seek help from a sober friend.

“The police will continue to carry out such operations to ensure all road users comply with the law. Cooperation from the public is needed to make sure our streets remain safe,” he added.

In an unrelated incident, a female pillion rider died while her husband is in serious condition after their motorcycle was involved in a road accident at KM14.2 along the Iskandar Sultan highway heading towards Iskandar Puteri.

Johor Baru North OCPD Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh said the incident occurred at around 10.30pm on Saturday (Nov 23).

“The accident occurred when the motorcycle, driven by a 33-year-old man with his 29-year-old wife as the pillion rider, lost control and fell at the scene.

“The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries to his head and right arm and is being treated in the red zone at Sultanah Aminah Hospital, while his wife sustained serious head injuries and passed away during treatment at the same hospital,” he added.

ACP Balveer said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and urged witnesses to contact the Johor Baru North police hotline at 07-5563122.
