KUALA LUMPUR: Almost 40,000 traffic summonses were issued to commercial vehicles for various offences nationwide in the first nine months of the year, says a senior policeman.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said some 38,367 summonses were issued in various operations between January and September.
"We conducted 4,822 operations nationwide this year and seized 177 vehicles.
"We are aware there are a lot of accidents involving heavy vehicles lately, thus we have always been proactive in conducting enforcement operations on such commercial vehicles," he said when contacted yesterday.
Comm Mohd Yusri said 17,905 people have been killed in accidents nationwide between January and October.
"Of the overall total, the majority of those killed were in cars (15,402), followed by motorcycles (1,040), lorries (825), and four-wheel drive vehicles (619), while 19 were pedestrians," he said.
Some 198 accidents this year involved commercial vehicles, he said.
"A total of 97 of the cases were fatal accidents, followed by 32 cases where victims were seriously injured and 39 cases where victims sustained minor injuries," he added.
Comm Mohd Yusri reminded all road users to be extra careful during the northeast monsoon season, when heavy rains are expected.
"Always be mindful while on the road for the safety of all road users.
"Pay attention to road conditions and be aware of other road users as well," he said.
For those experiencing a vehicle breakdown, Comm Mohd Yusri advised them to place sufficient signage to alert other road users.
"Park in the emergency lane and ensure there are ample signs that a vehicle has stalled or broken down.
"Such steps are essential to prevent accidents involving stalled vehicles," he said.
