Perdana Park granted reopening approval after otter incident

KOTA KINABALU: Perdana Park Tanjung Aru has been granted permission to resume operations whenever it is ready, according to Kota Kinabalu City Hall.

The popular recreational park, frequented by joggers and families for its musical fountain, has been closed for about two months following a Sept 11 incident where a group of otters attacked three joggers.

One female jogger required hospitalisation due to injuries sustained in the attack.

"Permission for the park's reopening was communicated to its management in early November for further action," City Hall said in a statement on Saturday (Nov 23).

However, the management will decide when the park will officially reopen its doors to the public, the statement added.

City Hall also urged the public to direct any queries about the park’s operations to its management.

Efforts by the Sabah Wildlife Department to capture the otter family involved in the attack have so far been unsuccessful, with the department's director, Roland Niun, noting that the typically harmless creatures remain elusive.

Otters, listed as protected wildlife under Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, have recently been sighted in several other recreational parks in Kota Kinabalu, particularly in areas near rivers and lakes.
