KUALA LUMPUR: Good moral values, ethics and upholding integrity should be emphasised in the training programme for police trainees, says Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
"It is important for them to embrace these values so that when they graduate and start work, they will bear in mind such important issues that must not be overlooked.
"I really hope the leadership of the police force will infuse such good values (in the training programme) to form a good foundation for the trainees," he said when contacted on Sunday (Nov 24).
He was commenting on Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain's call to police trainees to uphold integrity and avoid corrupt practices when they begin their careers.
"It is very timely that the IGP reminded the trainees the importance of integrity in their lives and careers.
"In this aspect, both the IGP and Deputy IGP (Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay) have been consistent in always reminding not only the trainees but all police personnel and officers as well," Lee added.
Integrity, good morals and ethics are very vital to ensure public trust in the nation's key law enforcement institution, he said.
"While only a small percentage of police personnel are involved in wrongdoing and malpractice, it is still a matter of great concern as the police force is a law enforcement institution and as such, there should not be any law breakers among the rank and file.
"Effective supervision of personnel and officers must be done to properly address the matter," he said.
The government must also ensure that the salaries and allowances of police personnel are always under review to address the high cost of living, Lee said.
"At the same time, police personnel who worked overtime must be commensurate with the task and duties they are performing.
"I also hope that police quarters will be properly maintained and if repairs are needed, it will be done without delay. It is necessary to create a good living environment for the police and their families," he said.
