Communications and Multimedia Act amendments to tackle cyber threats to be tabled next month

KUALA LUMPUR: Amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat next month, says Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching (pic).

She confirmed that the Cabinet approved the proposed amendments during its meeting on Friday (Nov 22).

Teo explained that the amendments aim to address online threats and the spread of false information, particularly in light of the growing use of technology.

She also mentioned that the Online Security Bill would be tabled soon to combat criminal activities on social media, including the dissemination of fake news.

"In addition, there are also provisions under other ministries such as the Home Ministry to take action against the spread of fake news," Teo said in Parliament on Monday (Nov 25).

The proposed amendments will also include provisions granting police and other authorities the power to preserve and disclose communication data.

"We believe that this method accounts for new technologies, ensuring that investigations by the authorities will be more effective," Teo said in her response to a supplementary question from Riduan Rubin (Ind-Tenom).
