Doctor loses over RM130,000 in online investment scam

MUAR: A 30-year-old woman lost over RM130,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam.

Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz reported that the victim, a doctor, attended an online seminar via Google Meet on May 24 last year, where she was introduced to several investment packages.

"She was offered an investment scheme requiring RM138,000, with a promise of RM5,000 monthly returns for two years.

"Enticed by the high returns, the victim made a total payment of RM138,000 to a company account between July 4 and July 6, 2023," he said in a statement on Monday (Nov 25).

However, ACP Raiz explained that the victim did not receive the promised returns.

The situation worsened when the alleged scammer informed her that the company had incurred losses and could no longer pay the promised dividends.

"The victim only received RM3,676 in revenue from her investment. Feeling deceived, the victim lodged a police report on Nov 14," said ACP Raiz.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries penalties of imprisonment from one to ten years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction.

"We urge the public to exercise caution and take preventive measures, especially when engaging in financial transactions, to avoid falling victim to similar scams," ACP Raiz advised.
