Driver in drink-driving incident that killed married couple to be charged in JB tomorrow


JOHOR BARU: The driver involved in a drink driving incident that resulted in the death of a married couple in Pasir Gudang is expected to be charged at a Magistrate's Court here on Tuesday (Nov 26).

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said that the investigation papers were submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office, which has instructed for charges to be filed against the car driver involved.

“We have completed our investigation into a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of a man and a woman at the intersection of Jalan Besar and Jalan Masjid last Saturday (Nov 16).

“The driver faces two counts under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death or injury by reckless or dangerous driving,” he said in a statement here on Monday (Nov 25).

Earlier, on Nov 16, Supt Mohd Sohaimi was reported saying that two people were killed after their motorcycle was run over by a vehicle, driven by a man under the influence of alcohol.

The collision occurred at approximately 4am on Nov 16 at the intersection of Jalan Besar and Jalan Masjid.

“The driver heading towards the Pasir Gudang Highway allegedly ran a red light and collided with a motorcycle coming from Jalan Masjid.

“The motorcyclist, a 37-year-old man, and his pillion rider, a 35-year-old woman, sustained severe injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene,” said Supt Mohd Sohaimi.

The incident has also drawn the attention of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim's wife, Che Puan Mahkota Khaleeda Bustamam, who visited the victim’s children and parents in Taman Cendana, Pasir Gudang, last Friday (Nov 22).
