KOTA KINABALU: Cocoa farmers in Sabah’s northern Kota Marudu district have reached a significant milestone with the launch of a premium dark chocolate made from 68% cocoa exclusively sourced from the region.
Named "Single Estate Kota Marudu Chocolate," the product was officially launched by Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin at a ceremony attended by Benns Ethicoa managing director Wilfred Ng and representatives from the Malaysian Cocoa Board.
Produced at Benns Ethicoa's chocolate factory, this new addition to their bean-to-bar range features cocoa beans cultivated by local farmer Poimon Dangkat.
"This initiative is a testament to the Malaysian Cocoa Board's dedication to bridging the gap between cocoa bean producers and users. I encourage the continued expansion of such efforts to strengthen the development of the national cocoa industry," said Chan.
He also commended Benns Ethicoa for their steadfast support of local cocoa farmers, which aligns with the ministry's vision of enhancing the local cocoa supply chain.
The ministry said in a statement that the cocoa industry in Malaysia is currently experiencing a surge in interest as bean prices have tripled, reaching between RM18 and RM23 per kg.
Rising global demand for cocoa beans has further boosted its prominence, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy.
From January to August this year, Malaysia’s cocoa sector generated RM8.873bil in export revenue, nearing the annual target of RM9bil.
Key contributors include semi-finished cocoa products like cocoa butter, cocoa powder, and chocolate, highlighting the sector’s role as an economic catalyst.
To sustain this momentum, the board is spearheading initiatives to revitalise cocoa farms, establish new plantations, and integrate modern technologies.
These efforts aim to increase local bean production and ensure long-term sustainability in the sector.
"The success of Kota Marudu’s cocoa farmers and the launch of the premium chocolate brand marks a significant step forward in positioning Sabah’s cocoa industry on the global stage," said the ministry in the statement.
