KUALA LUMPUR: Men who face sexual harassment are not reporting to the police, however more than a thousand male victims chose to complain at social support centers, says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
"Most don't take their complaints to the police, however many have come to complain at our regional social support centers.
"The ministry previously recorded only a dozen cases, but it increased to over 1,000 cases after the advocacy program was organised," the Women, Family and Community Development Minister said.
She said that the number is alarming, and it shows that men are also threatened, and these cases must be addressed, and would require effort from the whole community.
She also said that most sexual harassment cases that men face are from other men.
Nancy said this to reporters during the Elimination of Violence against Women campaign here on Monday (Nov 25).
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul was also present.
She also said that the campaign aims to address the spike in sexual violence cases, especially involving girls, and to raise awareness among the community.
"We see cases of violence against children and women, especially women and girls, increasing day by day.
"But whether the number truly reflects the reality, we don't know," she said, adding that the ministry will continue to organise this awareness program to let victims know that they are not alone.
