Socso Act amendments to cover tragedies outside workplace on the cards, says deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR: Amendments for the Employees' Social Security Act 1969 might be tabled in the next parliamentary session to include protection for tragedies outside of the workplace, says Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad.

He said that the Cabinet has agreed since March this year for the Human Resource Minister to implement the scheme for non-employment disaster social security which will protect those who are not in employment.

"Now, it is in the plans to bring the amendments proposals before the cabinet meeting.

"The amendment may not be tabled in Parliament in the current session, but will likely be presented during the coming session," he said during his response to Datuk Seri Saravanan Murugan (BN Tapah) in Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Nov 25).

Saravanan had asked if there is insurance protection for those who are 60 and above, and suffering from illnesses.

Abdul Rahman also said that by 2030, the elderly population will increase by 15%, as stated in the Kerangka Dasar Manusia 2025-2030 (Human Policy Framework).

"For workers aged 60 and above and still working in the formal sector, they are still eligible under the employment disaster scheme (Skim Bencana Pekerjaan)," he said.

Benefits of Sosco, he said, takes into account the daily living costs and the current inflation rate as well as the sustainability of the Sosco fund.
