Border control beefed up as river rises

KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) has increased border security following a rise in the water levels at Sungai Golok, to prevent smugglers from taking advantage of the situation.

Its Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the higher water level could allow smuggler boats to more easily cross the border.“We are using four-wheel drive vehicles on coastal roads during ‘Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan’.

“More patrols are conducted on these roads and along the banks of Sungai Golok especially in hotspots, since most of the riverbank is submerged and pose a danger to the personnel on duty,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He added that boats were also used to transport personnel affected by the floods to safer areas and GOF personnel carried out patrols using Scrambler bikes, which have the appropriate height to navigate floods.

Nik Ros Azhan said smuggling had gone down during the ongoing monsoon season due to the strong river currents, but some smugglers may take advantage of the situation and are willing to take the risk.
